Leigh, William Daniel

William Daniel Leighy (Lehi) ( born William Daniel Leahy ; May 6, 1875 - July 20, 1959 ) - American naval leader, naval admiral, politician and diplomat.

Born in Hampton, Iowa, into a family of Irish immigrants. At an early age, he moved with his family to Ashland, Wisconsin.

In 1897 he graduated from the Naval Academy and then served on the ship USS Oregon and then in the Pacific. In 1898, he participated in the Battle of Santiago during the Spanish-American War (which became the only battle in which Lehi participated directly). He returned to the United States only in 1902, until that time serving on various ships during the American-Philippine War and the Boxer Uprising in China . After returning for five years, he served alternately on several ships based in the region of the Panama Canal under construction.

In 1902, he was temporarily transferred to the coastal service and worked at the Naval Academy, since 1907, in particular, teaching physics and chemistry.

He again went to sea in 1909, starting to serve on one of the ships of the Pacific Fleet, in 1911 he was promoted to lieutenant commander, in 1912, during the American occupation of Nicaragua , he was chief of staff of the naval forces.

From 1912 to 1937 he held various posts in the naval and related departments and at certain times took command of some battleships.

In the years 1937-1939 he served as head of naval operations .

In 1939, he left the service in the Navy and was appointed by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt as Governor of Puerto Rico .

In 1940 he was appointed US Ambassador to France, which was under the control of the Vichy regime .

In 1942, he was again drafted into the armed forces by Roosevelt and appointed chief of the president’s personal headquarters. Lehi held this position under Roosevelt and Truman until his retirement in 1949.
