Biography

Osip Abramovich Avsiyan was born in Pavlograd of the Ekaterinoslav province (now Dnepropetrovsk region of Ukraine), in the family of Abram Osipovich Avsiyan and Maria Osipovna Danel. In 1919 the family moved to Simferopol. Childhood and youth passed in Crimea, Simferopol, where Osip Avsiyan studied at the art studio of the academician of battle painting Nikolai Semenovich Samokish , from which such artists as L. A. Bruni, P. V. Miturich , P. Lvov, G. Frents, Ya. A. Basov and others. In 1937, the Crimean Art College was organized on the basis of Samokish Studio. “The pedagogical methods of Nikolai Semenovich were very peculiar. I do not mean that he lacked any system or principles. The thing is different - in the presentation of these principles. Everything was served at ease. It seems to me that he sought to maintain the student’s direct relationship to life ”(O. A. Avsiyan. The Batalist).

In 1936 he entered the Leningrad Academy of Arts. At the end of the 1930s in Leningrad, he also attended Pavel Nikolayevich Filonov’s school: “Focusing on the“ principle of doneness ”, Filonov sought to prove that everything depicted in the picture, whether it be a realistic or abstract canvas, should primarily convey the soulful metamorphoses of artist ... I recall how Pavel Nikolaevich often called us to the maximum exertion. This is a very important point, as it seems to me, for understanding the method of its work ”(O. A. Avsiyan. The principle of accomplishment). At the school of P. N. Filonov, not only was a search for new ways in art related to experiments in the field of form, drawing, color, at the same time, classical heritage, Russian archaic, popular print, and folk art were studied there. “The master and student,” said Filonov, “must in their profession love everything that is“ done well ”and hate everything that is“ not done. ” [1]

Education continued at the Moscow Institute of Fine Arts named after V.I. Surikov , which was then headed by I.E. Grabar . There a meeting took place with a whole galaxy of brilliant artists and educators: V. N. Baksheev , who knew Surikov , Repin , Serov , Savrasov , Nesterov , who studied with Levitan ; A.V. Lentulov , K.K. Zefirov and N.E. Radlov .

Since the 40s of the XX century, he participated in regional, regional, republican and all-Union exhibitions. Since 1944 - a member of the Union of Artists of Russia. Osip Avsiyan's works are in the collections of: Moscow Museum of N. Ostrovsky, Simferopol Museum of Art, Simferopol Museum of Local Lore, Sevastopol Art Gallery, Simferopol Music College, Lviv Art Gallery, Rybinsk State Historical-Architectural and Art Museum-Reserve, Taganrog Museum, P. Museum I. Tchaikovsky in Klin, as well as in private collections.

He was buried in Moscow at the Vostryakovsky cemetery [2] .

Teaching activities

After graduation, Osip Avsiyan taught drawing, painting and composition at the N. S. Samokish Crimean Art School , the Podolsk Art School, the Moscow Stroganov Institute (now MGHPA named after S. G. Stroganov), and the Moscow State Academic Art School in memory of 1905 (now the Moscow State Art Academy of memory of 1905). Among his famous students are such artists as Dmitry Plavinsky , Evgeny Shukaev , Mikhail Petrov and many others. Some of them successfully work in cinema, theater, and television, others in book graphics and design.

“A unique person, Osip Abramovich Avsiyan, taught composition ... Until now I have been mentally saying“ thank you ”to him. Such educators need to erect monuments ”(Victor Slatinsky, Dean of the Painting Department of Moscow State Art Institute named after V. I. Surikov). “Compositions, as the will to transform the white sheet, of course, I owe the wonderful teacher Avsiyan, with whom we worked in 1952” (Dmitry Plavinsky). “Osip Abramovich Avsiyan developed a unique compositional program that has no analogues. It is perfect in its simplicity and accessibility ... The merit of this teacher is not only the development of a unique program, but also the methodology ”(Yuri Popkov, chief artist of the Painting-Info Publishing House). “I was lucky to learn from Osip Abramovich Avsiyan, a teacher from God, an intelligent and erudite person. He tried to instill in us taste, culture, and a professional attitude to art ”(Alexey Dyachkov).

Osip Avsiyan is the author of numerous articles in the magazines “Young Artist”, “Artist” and others. Art composition teachers rely on the composition program developed by him in the 70s of the XX century, and his book: “Nature and Drawing according to the presentation ”(publishing house“ Fine Art ”, M., 1985), which entered the educational process of art educational institutions, is well known to several generations of students. His other book “Composition. On the way to creativity ”(ed.“ Linor ”, M., 2004) incorporated ideas accumulated and tested over decades of artistic and pedagogical activity.

Illustrator

Artist Avsiyan was extremely serious about illustration, as such. And here he also assigned a special place to the composition, arguing that "it solves the meaning of the depicted scene and, more importantly, its emotional mood." The illustration, in his opinion, should not only cause a desire to examine it, it should express “a big idea, deep thought, reveal the meaning and complexity of human relations, and the nature of what is happening should immediately reach the viewer before he even sees the expression on the faces of the participants in this scenes. " At the same time, the dramatic tension of the drawing, he believed, "depends primarily on the composition - lines, light spots, silhouettes." He made illustrations: to the novel by N. Ostrovsky “How steel was tempered,” the story of A. M. Gorky “Cain and Artem”, the story of A. P. Chekhov “The Chestnut”, to the “Tale of how Ivan Ivanovich quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich "N.V. Gogol, fairy tales by A. S. Pushkin, the book of I. A. Kozlov" In the Crimean underground ", the story of E. Kazakevich" Star ", the book of short stories by N. Wagner" Zoykin's groom ", the stories of P. Proskurin" Taiga song ”, to Russian folk tales, to the series of books“ New School Library. Silver Age ”, to the series of educational books for preschoolers“ I am starting to study ”,“ I want to study ”, to the series of educational guides“ Canada ”,“ America ”,“ Australia ”, etc.
