History

When Bohuslain moved away from Denmark to Sweden as a result of the war, the fishing village of Stremen was located on the site of modern Strömstad. The Regency Council under the young Charles XI in 1667 granted the village the right of a trading place ( köping ). By raising the status of Strömstad, the Swedish government sought to transfer trade from Norwegian Fredrickshall to it. In 1672, Strömstad was already mentioned as a city, and in 1676 the king confirmed its privileges.

The development of Strömstad was hampered by the constant wars between Sweden and Denmark, as well as competition from Uddevalla and nearby Norwegian cities.

During the Northern War , the main store of the Swedish army was located in the city, in addition, during the Norwegian campaigns of Charles XII (1716-1718) it housed its headquarters. On July 8, 1717, Thordenschöld attempted to capture Strömstad, but he was met by a 1800 Swedes detachment under the command of Johan Yertta, who managed to repel the attack. On August 3, another attempt by the Norwegians to capture the city was reflected. However, in July 1719, Danish troops were still able to destroy the city fortifications.

At the beginning of the Danish-Swedish war of 1788-1789. in the city was the Swedish detachment of Colonel Tranefelt, who, however, when the Norwegian troops approached Strömstad, left him. After that, until November 1788, the city was in the hands of the Norwegians.

In the middle of the 18th century, about 300 inhabitants lived in Strömstad, however, the arrival of herring to the western coast of Sweden caused the growth of its economy and population growth, which in 1805 already numbered almost 1,100 inhabitants. Sailing and fishing throughout the 19th century were the main occupations of the townspeople. In the XX century, the role of trade increased, the canning industry arose in the city, and locksmiths appeared.

Economics

A significant role in the city’s economy is played by trade, tourism and the services sector.
