Biography and sports career

He began to do gymnastics in 1949 at the age of six in his hometown of Frankfurt an der Oder, then he moved to Leipzig. He played for the sports club of the Institute of Physical Culture (Leipzig). Trained by Jochen Nonnast and Siegfried Fulle. At the championships of the GDR in the period from 1961 to 1974. won a total of 34 individual medals.

Champion of the Summer Olympic Games in Munich (1972) in the vault. Bronze medalist of the Games in Tokyo (1964), Mexico City (1968) and Munich (1972) in the team championship. Bronze medalist of the world championship in Ljubljana (1970) in the exercise on the horizontal bar and in the team championship; two-time European champion (1971 and 1973) in an exercise on the crossbar. The silver medalist of the European Championship (1971) in the exercise on parallel bars, the bronze medalist (1971) in the vault, (1973) in the all-around and floor exercises.

Due to an Achilles injury in 1974, he was forced to end his sports career. In 1975 he graduated from the Institute of Physical Culture (DHfK) with a degree in physical education teacher.

  • 1974-1976 - head coach for the women's team of the sports club "Leipzig",
  • 1976-1985 - head coach of SK Leipzig in gymnastics,
  • 1985-1987 - Lecturer, Institute of Physical Culture,
  • 1998-2002 - Assistant to the former world cycling champion Gustav-Adolf Schur , elected deputy of the Bundestag from the PDS ,
  • 2001-2004 - answered the German Gymnastics Federation for the development and conduct of large-scale events.

In 2005, despite a heart operation, he was declared at a veteran gymnastics tournament. In 2012, he represented Germany at demonstrations in Hong Kong. He planned to participate in the International Festival of German Gymnastics in 2013 in the Rhine-Neckar region.
