List of Knights of the State Emblem of the Higher Degrees

1st grade signs
2nd grade badge

This list contains a list of persons awarded the Order of the State Emblem of the highest degrees (chain, grades 1 and 2).

The Order of the State Emblem ( Estonian Riigivapi teenetemärk ) is the highest distinction of the Republic of Estonia for citizens of Estonia for their services to the state [1] .

History

The Order of the State Emblem was established by the Law on State Awards of the Republic of Estonia on October 7, 1936, in memory of the declaration of independence of Estonia on February 24, 1918 [2] .

The order was established in 12 degrees: chain of the order, Special large ribbon, grades 1-5, and a medal in 5 degrees. After the restoration of the order by the law of May 5, 1994, the number of degrees was reduced and the order began to consist of 6 degrees: the chain of the order and grades 1-5. In 1939, it was decided to award the Order of the State Emblem only to Estonian citizens [3] .

The order signs developed by the artist Paul Lukhtein [L 2] are based on the image of the State Emblem of the Republic of Estonia: three azure leopards on a golden shield surrounded by an oak wreath.

The awarded chain of the order is awarded the golden badge of the order on a golden chain decorated with precious stones ( ruby , sapphires and diamonds ) and a golden order star. The chain holder is also given the ribbon of the former degree “Special Big Ribbon” - blue with a gold border (in 1994-2007 - 1st degree, blue), for wearing in some cases instead of a chain [4] [5] .

Since, according to their status, chains of Estonian orders can only be awarded to heads of state [6] [7] , and the Order of the State Emblem can only be awarded to Estonian citizens, only Estonian presidents can be awarded the chain of the Order of State Emblem. Until 2007, the chain of the order was considered an official sign of the President of Estonia and was handed to him upon assuming office, but the president was not considered a holder of the chain [8] . The Law on Awards dated December 19, 2007 [4] established simultaneously with the assumption of the presidency to consider him the holder of the chain of the Order of the State Emblem, with the presentation of the chain of the order, which he carries in office as president and remains with him after the resignation of the president. By the same law, it was decided to consider the chain of former Estonian presidents - Lennart Meri (posthumous) and Arnold Rüütel, to be awarded the chain on February 23, 2008, on the eve of Estonia's Independence Day .

The holders of the Special Large Ribbon were awarded a gold badge on a wide cross-shoulder ribbon and a golden medal star [2] .

Cavaliers of the 1st class are awarded a gold badge on a wide shoulder strap and a silver medal star [4] .

Cavaliers of the 2nd class are awarded a gold badge on a narrow ribbon for wearing around their necks, and a silver medal star [4] .

The list contains the gentlemen of higher degrees (degrees with a star) of the Order of the State Emblem.

Comments

  1. ↑ President Päts chain was considered an official sign of the president and he was not considered a chain holder [L 5] , but in the register of Estonian awards he is included in the list of chain holders of the coat of arms of the Order of the State Emblem [10] .
  2. ↑ In some sources [L 5] President Päts Special Big Ribbon was considered as belonging to the President’s official цепи chain of the order, and he was not considered a Cheval Special Ribbon holder, however, according to the State Awards Act 1936 (as amended in 1938), the President of Estonia became the holder of the Special Big Ribbon on the day of taking office, and in accordance with this, President Päts is included in the register of Estonian awards on the list of holders of the Special Big Ribbon of the Order of the State of the emblem [16] .
