History
The market that existed from the Middle Ages on Hoher Markt Square proved insufficient to provide food for the population of Vienna. A new market was created in the new square, which was already mentioned in 1234 under the name novum forum . In the 19th century, flour and grain were traded here, which gave the square the name “Flour Market” ( German Mehlmarkt ), which was established for the area until the 20th century. During World War II, the area received serious damage. Modern buildings were erected on the site of the destroyed buildings.
In the first half of the 20th century, the Vienna tram terminal was located on the square. In 1942, the end of the route line No. 58 was moved to Ringstrasse , and in 1948 it was decided to close the section of the highway leading to Neuer Markt [1] .
Attractions
In the center of the square there is the Donner fountain with sculptures, the main one of which is the figure of Providence . The composition was built according to the project of the Viennese sculptor George Raphael Donner in 1739 .
