Biography

Mooji (née Anthony Paul Mu-Young) was born on January 29, 1954 in Port Antonio (Jamaica). In 1969, after the death of his father, he emigrated to the UK, to London, where his mother lived at that time. He independently mastered the technique of working with ceramics, sculpture, stained glass art, for some time he was a street portrait painter in the London West End, then earned painting and stained glass, and also taught painting at Brixton College for some time.

In 1987, Anthony Paul Mu-Young met a Christian mystic, a joint prayer with which radically changed his worldview. A direct experience of the Divine descended on him, and his consciousness underwent such a radical change that many friends and acquaintances ceased to recognize him. Soon, Mooji left his work at Brixton College, left the house and lived for 6 years following the spontaneous manifestation of life and Divine will, being in a state of spontaneous meditation, paying almost no attention to the outside world, not working anywhere, enjoying inner joy, fullness and natural peace. During these years, he was helped by sister Julianne, who invited Mooji to live in her house. Mooji speaks of this period as his “years in the wilderness” and describes it as follows: “As if God shook me in his arms”

At the end of 1993, Mooji went to India to visit Dakshineshwar in Calcutta, the place where Sri Ramakrishna lived and taught, the texts of which greatly influenced Mooji. However, never reaching Calcutta, Mooji ended up in Indira Nagar in Lucknow, where he met his guru, Papaji . For several months, Muji lived in Lucknow and visited the satsangi Papaji. During one of the satsangs, Papaji said: "If you crave to be one with the Truth -" You "must completely disappear." Hearing these words, Mooji felt great anger at the teacher and decided to leave Lucknow immediately. But during a short walk, the anger and condemnation that filled him suddenly disappeared somewhere, leaving his mind alone, emptiness and perfect love for the Master. In 1994, Mooji received a message from London that his oldest son had suddenly died of pneumonia. This news forced Muji to leave the Master and return to London, but the loss of his son did not affect the silence and peace that established in Muji’s heart after his stay with Papaji.

In 1997, Mooji again came to Papaji. This was the last meeting with the Master. At that time, Papaji was already very ill and had great difficulty moving around, but his inner light and presence remained intact. Soon after returning from India to London, Mooji receives news of the Master’s departure. When asked by the students how he felt when he heard about the death of Papaji, Mooji replies: “The Principle that manifests itself through the form of the Master is always HERE and NOW. The real Master never dies, Mr. dies. The true Master is Sat Guru within, the only Reality. "

Since 1999, Mooji has been sharing the truth in the form of spontaneous meetings, satsangs, retreats and individual conversations with many seekers who come to him from all over the world in search of a direct awareness of the Truth. He is one of the few modern teachers in the Advaita tradition who explains “self-knowledge” and the method of “self-research” is very simple and accessible, so this explanation often does not require any special training from the students and is perceived directly and easily. Listeners of Mooji note that the energy emitted in his presence silently unites all those around, spreading impersonal closeness, love, joy, play and at the same time - the authoritative influence of the Master. His style - spontaneous, clear, compassionate - often full of humor.

In recent years, Mooji traveled extensively in Spain, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Sweden, North America, Argentina, Brazil, India, where he held satsangs, meetings, intensives and retreats. In 2011, Mooji first visited Russia and was conquered by the openness of Russian people and their passionate desire for knowledge of the Truth. In 2012, he conducted a series of satsangs in Ukraine. In October 2013, he again came to Russia (from October 19 to 21 he held satsangs in Moscow, and from October 25 to 30 he held a “retreat of silence” near St. Petersburg).

Until 2011, Mooji resided in Brixton, England. He currently lives in Monte Sahaja, near the city of Funcheira in the Alentejo region of South-West Portugal , where the construction of an ashram for conducting satsangs and intensives on an ongoing basis is in full swing.

Teaching

Despite the fact that many people attribute Muji to the tradition of neo-advaita, he himself in an interview on this topic notes: “Honestly, I don’t know much about neo-advaita. I heard this term, but I don’t know when it came about, and I don’t know what they are talking about. ” The Muji method is a direct continuation of the teachings of Sri Raman Maharshi - a method of self-examination through the question "Who am I?" However, Mooji brings this method to absolute simplicity and makes it accessible even to those who have never studied any scriptures and are far from spiritual practices in the usual sense. It is based on a call to discover that a person is not really his physical body and mind; everything that can be perceived and what can be observed from the outside is not you, everything that can be seen as an object is not a pure, true Self (Atman). In order to realize your true Self, you need to drop all concepts, all beliefs, all thoughts, ideas, opinions, ideas about yourself and the world, past, future, feelings, feelings, emotions, and also everything that can be seen from side. It is necessary to abandon identification with your physical body and with your personality (EGO). “You are not an object, you are pure subjectivity,” says Mooji. To do this, you first need to find in yourself the one who is watching everything that happens (thoughts, sensations, feelings, events), enter the state of "presence", and then realize that this observer can also be observed. Thus, “Who am I?”, According to Mooji, this is the only question that is not directed at the object, but directed at the subject. Mooji calls this question a “piranha question,” that is, a question that ultimately “eats up the questioner himself.” At the same time, Mooji says that it’s not enough to understand all this at the level of the mind and that to realize the true I need a direct experience of myself as a true I - perceiving everything and being everything emptiness, on the screen of which the action of the whole perceived manifested world, Leela - the divine game Absolute with yourself. “Words are not equal to experience. Ultimately, experience is important. The teaching is absolutely useless if among those who practice it, there are no people who have accepted the teaching so much that it has turned into an experience, ”says Mooji.
