Botanical Description
The plants are erect, 25-120 cm tall.
Leaves in an amount of 5-10, located along the entire length of the stem, alternate. Leaf blades from elliptical-lanceolate to widely elliptical, 5-16 × 1.5-6.5 cm.
Inflorescences bear 3-18 (less often up to 22) flowers.
Sepals from yellow-green to pale brownish-yellow; elliptical sail , 14–20 × 7–13 mm, lateral sepals fused almost to the apex; sinsepalum 12-20 × 10-12 mm.
Petals of the same color as the sepals or somewhat more yellowish, from linearly oblong to linearly lanceolate, flat, 14-16 × 3-5 mm.
The lip is white, sometimes pinkish, obovate, 15-20 mm, a hole 11-14 mm in diameter.
Staminodynia is almost rounded.
Flowering: May – June [2] .
Range
North America (southwestern Oregon and northern California ) [3] .
Habitat
It occurs at altitudes from 0 to 1600 meters above sea level. Bright forests, coastal areas, shores of swamps and other water bodies. Often found on steep slopes [2] [3] . Often grows next to Darlingtonia californica [4] .
Security Notes
Although the total number of individuals is rather high (over 10,000), this species has a limited range [3] .
In the Culter
It is considered a complex species in the culture [4] . It is assumed that in places of natural growth, the coil mineral present in the rock provides unusual soil chemistry, which significantly limits the range of growth of this species. It has high winter hardiness , despite its geographical origin [5] . In summer, the aerial part of plants can withstand high temperatures, but the soil should remain cool (not higher than 18 ° C) [6] .
Information about winter hardiness is contradictory. Some sources indicate successful cultivation in Scandinavia , while others report damage to plants even in mild winters [4] .
Zones of frost resistance : 7–9 (maybe 5–6 in the presence of winter mulching) [7] . According to another source: 6-7 [6] . Open field grown in the UK [8] .
Location: well-lit areas [4] , or partial shade (40-50% of direct sunlight) [7] .
It is recommended to be grown in an inorganic soil mixture [6] [7] . Drought tolerance is low, the soil should not completely dry out. Soil pH is between 5.6 and 7.5 [4] .
