Biography

Harro von Senger was born in 1944 in the Swiss village of Willerzell, where he currently lives. Thanks to his innate abilities for languages, he studied Latin, Greek, German, French, English and Russian in addition to the official program at school.

Having accidentally met in 1963 [1] with the "Grammar of Spoken Chinese," carried away by his study. Studying at the Law Faculty of the University of Zurich , he simultaneously studied Chinese . Upon completion of training, he successfully defended his thesis on the topic "Traditional Chinese trade agreements", becoming a doctor of law.

From August 1971 to October 1973 he deepened his knowledge at the Law Faculty of Taipei University, while also improving his knowledge of the Chinese language. In the same period, he first learned about thirty-six Chinese stratagems , the secret of which he sought to unravel. Studying ancient Chinese culture, trying to understand stratagem, he posed a fundamental problem: "What is the essence of the differences in interpersonal contacts between representatives of European and East Asian civilizations." Harro von Senger spent six years in East Asia. While still at Taipei University, he began to study Japanese; after Taipei, he studied at the University of Tokyo in Japan for two years. From 1975 to 1977 he studied history and philosophy at Peking University . [one]

In 1977, Harro von Senger returned to Switzerland as a highly educated orientalist. Upon his return, he publishes his first article on stratagems, “Using 36 stratagems to criticize the gang of four,” in the Frankfurter Algemeine Zeitung .

Since 1981, von Senger has been a private assistant professor of synology at the University of Zurich . In 1989, he became a professor at the University of Freiburg , where since 1993 he has been dean of the Faculty of Philosophy. [3]

In 1988, the Swiss publishing house Scherz published a monograph by Harro von Senger on Chinese stratagems in German, and in 1990 its fifth edition was published. [4] By the time of the fifth edition, the monograph had become a bestseller of European Sinology and was translated into English, Chinese, Italian, Dutch, Japanese. The monograph in Chinese was published in two hundred thousand copies and was sold out within four months. The book was a success, received numerous rave reviews in many countries. [four]

In Russian, the first volume of the book was published in 1995, its circulation was successfully distributed. [5] In 2004, Eksmo Publishing House in Moscow published a two-volume book by Harro von Senger on Chinese art of living and surviving The Stratagems.
