A man of great morality and righteousness, he, like many of his predecessors, was elected a doge, being old, and the important obligations imposed by his position undermined his health.

Biography

Carlo Contarini was the son of Andrea Contarini and Elizabeth Morozini ; Carlo's father died ten days after the birth of his son. Thus, Carlo became the heir to the great fortune and name of Contarini, such a powerful and influential family of the Venetian Republic . Over the course of a long and successful career, Contarini served as the Conductor , Rector , Savio and Member of the Senate of Venice, also passing through the title Cursus honorum . It is curious that in recent years he has practically moved away from public life and did not even think about a candidate for the post of prosecutor of San Marco .

He married Pauline Loredan , who left a memory of herself as a very restrained woman.

Board

After the death of Francesco Molina on February 27, 1655, voters met in March to elect his successor, but could not agree on one candidate. In the end, they settled on Carlo Contarini as a compromise candidate with ties to both sides. He was already old, so everyone understood that his rule would be short. He was elected doge at the 68th meeting on March 27, 1655 .

Contarini's reign was not marked by any noteworthy events. As a doge, he tried to reconcile the warring factions that split Venice. Venice's long war over Crete with the Ottoman Empire continued throughout his reign.

Perhaps due to the heavy workload in connection with the duties of the Doge, Carlo Contarini fell ill at the beginning of 1656 and after unsuccessful attempts at treatment he died on May 1 after 13 months of his reign [3] .
