Biography

Karl Krauch was the son of a chemist and pharmacist Karl Krauch Sr. and his wife Martha, nee Schwadere. After school since 1906 he studied chemistry and botany at the University of Giessen , as well as at the University of Heidelberg . After receiving a doctorate in science in 1911, he began working as a research fellow at the University of Giessen. Since 1912, he was also an employee of the world's largest chemical concern "Baden Aniline and Soda Factory" ( BASF ).

After the outbreak of World War I, he went to the front as a soldier, but already in 1915 he was returned to the BASF as an “irreplaceable employee” and began working at the Oppau and Lane plants. In 1922 he became commercial director of the ammonia factory in Merseburg . After the creation in 1925 of the IG Farben concern ( IG Farbenindustrie AG i. L. ) from 1926 to 1940. He was the leading employee of IG Farbenindustri ( IG Farbeniridustri AG ).

In 1935, at IG Farben, Karl Krauch headed the military department of the concern and the intermediary agency ( Vermittlungsstelle ) for relations with the Wehrmacht, from 1936 to 1938 he was the head of the Research and Development Service for German raw materials.

In 1937 he joined the NSDAP . Since August 22, 1938 - General Commissioner for Special Issues of Chemical Production ( Generalbevollmächtigter für Sonderfragen der chemischen Erzeugung ) in the Office for a four-year plan . Since 1939 - President of the Imperial Economic Development Service ( Reichsamt für Wirtschaftsausbau ) in the Office for a four-year plan. At these posts he took an active part in preparing Germany for the war. Since 1939, he was a member of the Presidium of the Imperial Committee for Science and a member of the Supervisory Board of Kontinentale Öl AG. In 1939, Adolf Hitler awarded him the Iron Cross for "victory on the battlefield of German industry." Heidelberg University awarded him an honorary doctorate, and Berlin University appointed him an honorary professor. In addition, Karl Krauch became the Senator of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society for the Development of Science (German Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften ) and a member of the German Academy of Aviation Research ( Deutsche Akademie der Luftfahrtforschung ).

After the death of Karl Bosch in 1940, he became chairman of the Supervisory Board and CEO of IG Farben. He remained in this post until the end of the war. June 5, 1943 was awarded the Knight's Cross for military merits .

After the war ended, Karl Krauch was put under house arrest by the Americans, then arrested. During the trial of the 6th American Military Tribunal in the case of IG Farben (“United States of America v. Karl Krauch and others”), he was convicted of using the labor of prisoners in concentration camps. He was charged with “war crimes and crimes against humanity through participation in enslavement and forced slave labor on a large scale of the inhabitants of concentration camps and civilians in occupied countries and prisoners of war, as well as ill-treatment, intimidation, torture and killing of enslaved people” [ 1] . On June 30, 1948, he was sentenced to 6 years in prison. He served his sentence in Landsberg prison in Bavaria, in 1950 he was released. Then he was a member of the Supervisory Board of IG-Nachfolgegesellschaft Chemische Werke Hüls AG, since 1955 - Director of Hüls GmbH (Hüls GmbH). On February 19, 1965, Karl Krauch was a witness at the trial of employees of the Auschwitz concentration camp in Frankfurt in connection with the use of slave labor by prisoners of the concentration camp at the enterprises of IG Farben Concern [2] .
