The county of Flanders originated in 862 , when the king of the western francs, Charles II the Bald, transferred the region west of the Scheldt to his son-in-law Balduin's Iron Hand , who became the first Margrave of Flanders. His descendants from various dynasties ruled Flanders before the Great French Revolution . The rulers from the XII century wore the title of Count of Flanders . Initially, they were vassals of the kings of France , until in 1526 Francis I did not cede the suzerainty of Flanders to the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire .
In 1405, Flanders became part of the Burgundian Netherlands and together with them in 1482 was inherited by the Hapsburgs . Under the authority of the last country remained until 1790 .
During the Great French Revolution, Flanders was annexed by France, and from 1815 to 1830 it was part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands . Since 1831, Flanders has been part of Belgium , and the title of count of Flanders is carried by the younger children of the Belgian kings.
