Biography

Vicente Cervantes was born in the province of Salamanca on February 17, 1758 in the family of Jose Cervantes and Agueda Mendo Gutierrez. He studied in Madrid, then for several years he worked in a pharmacy. Soon he received a position in the Madrid Hospital. In 1786 he received a degree in botany, in March 1787 he was appointed professor. On the recommendation of K. Gomez, Ortega Cervantes received an invitation to participate in a botanical expedition to New Spain .

December 29, 1786 Cervantes married Catalina Perez. In June 1787 Vicente together with Catalina went to New Spain, in October they arrived in Mexico City . Cervantes was the first teacher of botany in New Spain, from 1788 to 1826 he worked in the Botanical Garden in Mexico City.

After the return of members of the expedition in 1803 to Madrid, Cervantes stayed in Mexico City, studying the flora of the region. Until 1809, he worked at the Hospital of St. Andrew in Mexico City.

July 26, 1829 Vicente Cervantes passed away.

In addition to botany, Cervantes also studied chemistry. He first translated the work of A. Lavoisier Traité élémentaire de chimie into Spanish.
