Boltzmann Crater ( lat. Boltzmann ) - a large impact crater in the southern circumpolar region on the visible side of the moon . The name is given in honor of the Austrian theoretical physicist , founder of statistical mechanics and molecular kinetic theory Ludwig Boltzmann (1844-1906) and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1964. The formation of the crater dates back to the preectarian period [1] .

Crater Description
The immediate neighbors of the crater are Lejantil Crater in the east and Drigalsky Crater in the south [3] . Selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater , diameter 72.31 km [4] , depth 2.8 km [1] .
The crater lies near the western limb of the Moon and is practically inaccessible for observation from the Earth . During its existence, the crater shaft was significantly destroyed and smoothed by subsequent impacts ; the crater turned into a lowering area. The height of the shaft above the surrounding area is 1330 m [1] . The bottom of the crater bowl is relatively flat, in the eastern part more rugged, marked by many small craters. In the crater bowl there is a low smoothed central peak, somewhat offset northeast of the center of the bowl. A chain of small craters begins in the southeast of the crater, stretching in the direction of the northern part of the shaft of the Drigalsky crater.
