Gruberova’s singing style is distinguished by exceptional purity, mobility, dramatic intonations and the ability to sing high notes with great power, which made her the ideal Queen of the night at the very beginning of her career. Biography
Edita Gruberova was born in Bratislava (Slovakia). Slovak is her mother tongue, although Edita’s mother is Hungarian and her father is from a German family. She began her musical education at the Bratislava Conservatory and continued at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava . While studying, she sang in a folklore ensemble, several times appeared on the stage of the Slovak National Theater .
In 1968, Gruberova made her debut in Bratislava as Rozina in the Barber of Seville . After winning the vocal competition in Toulouse, she was invited to play the soloist in the opera company in Banska Bistrica , where she performed from 1968 to 1970. In 1969, vocal teacher Maria Medveckaya secretly arranged an audition for Gruberova at the Vienna State Opera , where Edita was immediately invited. After success at the Vienna Opera as Queen of the Night, Gruberova decided to emigrate to the west.
In subsequent years, she sang important parties at the Vienna Opera and the largest opera houses in the world. Critics and fans call Gruberova the “queen of coloratura.” She performed in Glyndeborn in 1973 and at the Metropolitan Opera in 1977 as the Queen of the Night, in 1977 at the Salzburg Festival under the direction of Herbert von Karayan in the role of Thibault in Don Carlos . In 1981, together with Luciano Pavarotti, starred in the movie Jean-Pierre Ponnel " Rigoletto ." In the role of Juliet (“Capulet and Montecchi” by Vincenzo Bellini ), she made her debut in Covent Garden in 1984. Other important roles of Gruberova are Zerbinetta ( Ariadne on Naxos ), Gilda ( Rigoletto ), Violetta ( La Traviata ), Lucia ( Lucia di Lammermoor ), Constance ( Abduction from the Seraglio ), Manon ( Manon ") And Oscar (" Masquerade Ball "); she sang Donna Anna ( Don Giovanni ) in La Scala in 1987, Mary in the Daughters of the Regiment in 1987, Semiramis in 1992 in Zurich, Queen Elizabeth in Roberto Devereux in Vienna in 1990. In 2003, she added Norma to her repertoire and performed in this party in Munich in 2008-2009.
Edita Gruberova made a lot of audio and video recordings. Her videography contains full-length recordings of the Donizetti trilogy about the Tudors and other Belcanto operas (mainly under the label Nightingale Classics ). Many films and television recordings of performances featuring Gruberova were released on DVD, including Norma, Traviata, Manon, Beatrice di Tenda , Lucretia Borgia and Linda di Chamuni .
In 2019, she decided to leave the opera stage. She has already performed in her farewell performances at the Bavarian Opera (Roberto Devereux G. Donizetti) and at the Hungarian Opera (Lucia di Lammermur G. Donizetti).
