The scientific name of the genus , Haemanthus , was adopted by Carl Linnaeus in 1753 from J. Python de Tournefort . It is formed from other Greek. αίμα - “blood” and άνθος - “flower”, which refers to the red color of the flowers of a typical species of the genus.
Species of the genus Hemanthus are evergreen or deciduous plants with an ovoid or pear-shaped bulb, usually immersed in the ground, less often protruding above it. Leaves are few, strap-shaped, fleshy. Three species are succulents .
The flowers are collected in a thick umbrella inflorescence at the end of the arrow, surrounded by red or white ovoid bracts. Whisk with a short tube. Stamens in the amount of 6, filiform, with an elongated anther. Pestle filiform, with tripartite stigma. Ovary spherical, lower.
The fruit is a fleshy rounded berry with black seeds .
All species of the genus are distributed exclusively in South Africa .
One species, white-flowered hemanthus , is often grown as a houseplant.
