Geographical position
The city is located 22 km east of the country's capital, the city of Managua . The absolute height is 60 meters above sea level [1] . The area of the municipality is 975.17 km².

Economics
In the 1970s and 1980s, the city’s economy was based on animal husbandry, but by the beginning of the 1990s this industry fell into decline. Today, the most important agricultural crops grown in the municipality are corn, sorghum, melons and peanuts. Volcanic tuff is mined north of the city. Industry is poorly developed.
