Masaya ( Spanish: Masaya ) is a city and municipality in western Nicaragua , the administrative center of the Masaya department.

Geographical position
Masaya is located about 14 km west of the city of Granada and 31 km southeast of Managua . To the west of the city is the active volcano Masaya , which gave it a name. The absolute height is 254 meters above sea level [1] .
History
The settlement was founded in the colonial period, September 2, 1839 received the status of a city and is one of the oldest cities in Nicaragua.
During the occupation of Nicaragua by US forces, the troops of General Benhamin Celedon in the city on September 19, 1912 entered into battle with the US Marine Corps. After the battle, the Nicaraguans retreated to the old Spanish fortress "Coyotepe", which was held until October 4, 1912. In the battle of October 4, 1912, the fortress was stormed by the Americans and General Celedon was killed.
In 1967, the Spanish fortress was recognized as a historical monument ( Monumento Histórico ).
In 1973, the Tendery Museum (one of the country's two museums) was located here [2] .
August 25, 1981 the city was awarded the honorary title "Hero City" [ specify ] .
On October 9, 1989, the government assigned the city the status of a historical and cultural center ("Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación").

Famous Natives
The former president of Nicaragua (from 2002 to 2007), Enrique Bolaños, was born in Masaya. Jesus Ovidio Soza García (Jesús Ovidio Soza García) is a student at the Military Academy of Logistics and Technical Support named after Army General Khrulyov (VAM TO) in St. Petersburg, Russia.
