Story

Red-haired Gelsomino has an amazing voice that can break glass and shake off pears from tree branches, but only brings trouble to its owner: neighbors declare him to be a sorcerer or a saint. Then the hero leaves his village.

Wandering around the world, the young man finds himself in the Land of Liars, in which the sea robbers , once led by the “golden-haired” Ataman Jacomon, once seized power. Giacomon announced to the people that he had magic golden hair, and all the inhabitants of the country, obeying the order of the self-proclaimed king, began to speak the opposite: instead of “good morning” - “good night”, call bread ink, prison - boarding house, horses - cows; cats were forced to bark, dogs - meow; instead of real coins, only fake ones are in use. Even the artist is forced to lie in his work, drawing portraits of people with three noses, six eyes and the like (while the king himself and his close ones do not obey the new laws and can speak as they please).

Together with new friends (drawn and revived due to the effect of the voice of Jelsomino the Lame Cat, Aunt Cornusa, her niece Romoletta and artist Bananito), Jelsomino raises the people to fight against the usurper. Ordinary townspeople, reading truthful graffiti (the Cromozhka secretly leaves them), often begin to call a spade a spade. The king is taken to clean water: he is completely bald and wears a wig. Unable to withstand the onslaught of rebellious subjects, Giacomon escapes, and his ministers and gendarmes stand trial. The truth is winning.

Production

The script was based on a translation of the book by Oleg Ivanitsky and Alexander Makhov in 1960.

The film was shot in the old quarters of Lviv and in Odessa [1] .

By the time Sergey Krupennikov was invited, part of the episodes with Dzhelsomino was already filmed with another actor - a student of the Shchukinsky school . For this reason, after replacing the actor, the filming went at a very accelerated pace - in violation of the Labor Code, the 14-year-old Krupennikov had to film some days from 11 am to 8 pm [2] .
