Story

Background

The film begins by showing the moments of the last appearance of Godzilla . Having devastated Tokyo , Godzilla leaves and enters the crater of the volcano. The whole world sighs in relief - the monster died, however, leaving its mark: restoration work in the city will last a very long time.

Main story

Along with rescue efforts in Tokyo, Godzilla's living cells are being searched. American intelligence manages to get living tissue among the ruins, but a loner interferes with the secret mission. He steals cells and takes them somewhere to Western Asia (the fictitious state of Saradia), for use, as it turns out, for peaceful purposes: to introduce Godzilla cells to valuable plant varieties to make them more resistant to harsh climates. This work was entrusted to the Japanese geneticist Shiragami. He begins work, but one day an explosion occurs in his laboratory, and his daughter Erica dies. Saddened by the incident, Shiragami leaves for Japan, but does not leave work on the project.

Five years later, Siragami grows a hybrid obtained by crossing Godzilla cells and roses. Turning to psychic Miki Saegus for help, Siragami discovers that Erica’s spirit lives in this creature.

At this time, scientists around the world are working on the creation of an antinuclear bacterium. The resulting sample is temporarily given to Siragami, one night two American spies try to steal it, but something similar to a plant attacks them. This is Biollante's "Legion" -Godzilla hybrid and plants. In the morning, police discover a dead spy at the crime scene and a broken wall. Soon, in a nearby lake, a giant plant appears, similar to a rose, but with tenacious roots and prominent jaws in a huge bud on the crown. This is a grown Biollanta.

At this time, representatives of a certain American corporation implicated in the search for an antinuclear bacterium threaten to detonate bombs near sleeping Godzilla if they are not given the bacteria. However, at the time of the transfer of the bacteria, the agent from Saradia kills the Americans, which leads to the explosion and awakening of Godzilla. By calculating his trajectory of movement, it turns out that he is interested in nuclear power plants on the coast. Saegusa decides to go to the intersection of Godzilla's path and forces him to change direction with his telepathy.

The government decides to use a unique Super X 2 weapon against Godzilla, made from the remains of the first Super X, equipped with a diamond mirror that can reflect the flow of atomic energy, as well as the ability to control without pilots. It can also fire missiles. For some time, Godzilla manages to delay, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the mirror spoils, and Super X 2 is taken for repair.

Godzilla goes on land and heads to the lake with Biollante. The fight begins: Biollante uses his roots with toothy grips, but Godzilla burns them with his beam. Having received serious wounds, Biollante crumbles into thousands of particles and disappears.

Godzilla heads to Osaka , where Super X is again set against him, and they also use an anti-nuclear bacterium. Super X finally breaks, and the bacterium for some reason does not work. The monster continues to destroy everything in its path, then returns to the sea, where Biollante unexpectedly appears from a cloud with active particles. Now, instead of a bud, she has a huge mouth that looks like a crocodile, and she can already move around. After a short fight, Godzilla feels weak - a high temperature activates the antinuclear bacterium in his body. Having lost strength, Godzilla falls into the ocean.

The Shiragi watching this is attacked by a terrorist who stole Godzilla’s cells at the beginning of the film. After him, an employee of the scientist Kirishima sets off in pursuit, he deals with him.

At the end of the film, Godzilla rises from the ocean - the water cooled its temperature. The monster turns and swims away.

Creation History

The script of the film is the result of the collective collaboration of many people. Initially, “Toho” planned to release the film back in December 1986, so in the fall of 1985 organized a competition for the script of the film among screenwriters and fans of Godzilla. Out of 5024 applications, 10 scenarios went to the finals, of which the final scenario was assembled in pieces. The transfer was caused by the fact that the movie “ King Kong Alive ” , released in 1986 at a Japanese film distribution , provoked such a negative reaction that “Toho” decided to postpone production from harm's way. Filming began only in early August 1989 and ended in late November.

Initially, Siragami was supposed to create Dyutalios - a hybrid of rat and fish, which Godzilla had to quickly deal with. This moment was replaced by a battle with Super X 2 and Biollante. Monster reincarnation scenes and her connection with Erica were also added. Also, according to various draft scripts, there were several options for the end of the film - Biollante could die or kill Godzilla.

Foreign movie rental

After the release of the film in Japan, the Toho film company showed it in Hong Kong , in duplicate in English. This international version of the film was released in the United States in 1992. In 1994, the film was shown in half-duplicated form in Russia . In 2012, the film was released on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Movie Impact

  • The movie episode is present in the movie Mars Attacks! .
  • Biollante appeared on the screens after his first appearance only once - in the flashback in the movie " Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla ". But she is present in the games Super Godzilla (1993) and Godzilla: Monster War (1994).
  • Dr. Siragami appears in the game Godzilla: Unleashed (2007).

Criticism

The film received mostly positive reviews. On the Rotten Tomatoes website , the film has 70% positive ratings [2] .
