William Powell ( eng. William Powell ; July 29, 1892 , Pittsburgh - March 5, 1984 , Palm Springs ) is an American film and theater actor, movie star of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer , who starred in the 1920s and the first half of the 1950s .

Biography

Born in Pittsburgh, in 1907 moved with his family to Kansas City. After graduating from school in 1910, he left for New York to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Art, which he graduated in 1912 and almost immediately debuted on Broadway. Then he worked for some time in small teams of theater and pop troupes [6] , but in 1920 he played a major negative role in the Broadway play Spanish Love, and in 1922 he played the role of Professor Moriarty in the silent film Sherlock Holmes . His most famous role is considered to be the role of Nick Charles in the film " Thin Man " based on the novel by Dashil Hammett.

He stopped acting in 1954, including due to a state of health, and died 30 years after that.
