Basic Information
The medal "For Distinction in Navigation" was established on February 12 ( 24 ), 1830 by decree of Nicholas I. This medal was awarded in the period until the reign of Nicholas II inclusive [1] [2] .
Award Order
Skippers and navigators (i.e. ship captains and their deputies) who have served for at least 12 years were awarded medals. It was also necessary to visit at least six voyages to distant foreign ports [1] [3] . It is known that the awards were quite rare: for example, in 1871-1880 there were an average of 4 awards per year [1] .
Medal Description
Medals were made of gold or silver . Diameter - 41 mm. On the front side of the coin depicts a portrait of the emperor , who ruled during the award. For example, during the reign of Nicholas I on the front side of the coin was his portrait facing the right, and around the circumference along the edge of the coin there was an inscription: “B.M. NIKOLAI I EMPEROR AND SAMOderZHES ALLOSOSS.” . Obverse changed accordingly with the beginning of the reign of the new emperor. On the reverse side of the coin, Minerva is depicted holding a laurel wreath in her right hand and a rod with the coat of arms of the Russian Empire in her left. In the background is a sailing ship at sea. In the upper part of the medal in an arc there is an inscription: “ FOR DIFFERENCE IN MARINE MARINE”. ", Below the cropped image date:" 12 FEB: 1830 " [1] [2] [4] . In 1905, the reverse changed a little - under the cropped image another date appeared: “ NOV 7: 1902 ” [4] . Medals were minted at the St. Petersburg Mint .
Wear Order
The medal had an eye for attaching to the tape. Wearing a medal relied on the neck. Used Anninsky or Stanislavovsky tape [1] .
