His father, Franz Dietrich Kohl, was rector of Kiel University for 50 years. Peter studied theology in Kiel and Rostock ; Until 1725 he lived in Leipzig .
He became famous for the study “Ecclesia graeca lutheranizans” ( Lübeck , 1723), which outlined the history of attempts by Catholics , Lutherans and Reformed to unite with the Greek Church , pointed out the similarities and differences between Orthodoxy and Lutheranism [1] .
On February 7 (18), 1725, he signed a contract with a Russian diplomat Count A. G. Golovkin for five years on his membership in the newly created Petersburg Academy of Sciences in the department of eloquence and church history. In St. Petersburg, Kohl took up Russian history and literature, studying the origin of the Russian language. He also took over the supervision of the academic gymnasium , but soon, in August 1727, he was relieved of his post [2] and left for Germany [3] .
In Hamburg, he published an essay in which he gave a biography of Cyril and Methodius on the basis of the Degree Book , explored the works of Ephraim the Syrian . He also published, with a Latin translation, the Slavic translation of the two homilies of Ephraim the Syrian on communion (not known in either Greek or Latin texts) and, thus, first pointed out the importance of Slavic-Russian writing for the restoration of lost Greek sources. Talking about the difference and the connection of the Slavic languages, he made a statement about their origin from the Church Slavonic language [1] .
