Story

A film adaptation of the novel “Mopra” by George Sand . The action takes place in the last decades of the XVIII century in pre-revolutionary France in the province of Berry .

The history of the life and evolution of Bernard de Mopres from childhood to death. Bernard's father is the only one who escaped the influence of his father and had a family, but he was killed two years ago. On the day when the mother of seven-year-old Bernard dies, his grandfather Tristan de Moprá suddenly arrives, known throughout the province for his cruelty and robber lifestyle. He takes his grandson with him to the gloomy dilapidated medieval family castle Rosh Mopra, in which his eight adult sons live with him. It is in this den of robbers that a seven-year-old boy who remains an orphan gets to live. Gradually, Bernard begins to participate in the robberies of his grandfather and uncles, and grows up as a savage and a robber who does not recognize any laws, except for the right of the strong. The only person in the area who is not afraid of these robber nobles is a smart peasant, a village philosopher nicknamed Solitaire, who professes revolutionary ideas.

Once a cousin of Bernard, 17-year-old Edme de Moprá, is captured in the Rosh Moprá castle. 18-year-old Bernard is fascinated by the beauty of the girl and helps her escape in exchange for a promise to marry him, which Edme is forced to give under the threat of violence. So Bernard first finds himself in the castle of Saint-Sever, in which the family of his uncle Hubert de Mopre (father of Edme) lives - an intelligent, educated, kind and fair person. Uncle Hubert offers Bernard to stay with them in Saint-Sever. Here, at first everything is new and unusual for Bernard: the inhabitants of Saint-Sever in the evenings are fond of reading Montesquieu , Rousseau and Condillac , wisdom, kindness and care reign in their house. Edmé, under the guidance of his spiritual mentor - Abbot Ober - decides to raise a cousin, help him defeat bad habits, break with the past and become an educated and worthy person. Under the beneficial influence of the inhabitants of Saint-Sever, Bernard develops, receives a comprehensive education, and happens in Paris in society. The young man passionately falls in love with Edma and asks her to keep her word in Rosh Moprá to become his wife, but the girl has been engaged to Lieutenant de la Marsh for a long time, and at first she does not feel anything for pity for Bernard, at some moments she is afraid and despises him.

In desperation, Bernard leaves for America, where in the ranks of the army of La Fayette, he participates in the American War of Independence . Seven years later, Bernard returns to France and again offers Edma to marry him, young people quarrel. Soon Edme was found in the forest, seriously wounded from a hunting rifle of Bernard. He is being arrested, witnesses and evidence against Bernard are on trial, but he has no evidence of his innocence, he is facing a death sentence. Despite the wound, Edmie comes to court to testify, publicly confesses her love for Bernard. Edmie believes that Bernard did not shoot her and is trying to prove his innocence to the court. Meanwhile, Solitaire finds out that Antoine de Maupre, who was considered dead in the fire along with Tristan and his other sons, shot at Edm. Bernard was released, he and Edme got married. Over time, Bernard de Moprá became one of the most respected people in the area.
