Reasons

The cause of the riots was the demolition of illegal buildings.

Consequences

On July 14, 2006, the Almaty police, backed up by a special forces detachment, tried to break down the self-defense of the residents of the Shanyrak village of Almaty in order to demolish their illegally built houses. [1] Clashes between locals and police ended in tragedy. One police officer, Aset Bisenov, was burned alive. [2]

Arrests

Aron Atabek was sentenced to 18 years for organizing riots. Erganat Taranshiev (15 years old), Kurmangazy Utegenov (16 years old) and Rustem Tuyakov (14 years old) were also convicted. The court found guilty another 20 residents of Shanyrak, but sentenced them to probation. [3]
