Al-Akhtal’s rich poetic heritage includes political poetry, numerous panegyrics of the Umayyads and their Iraqi governors. Brilliant polemical poems addressed to his rival, Jarir ibn Atiyah, brought al-Ahtal widely known in the Muslim world. Al-Ahtal was also a great master of wine poetry. These verses are accurate and vivid in detail and often grow into lively and realistic pictures of real life, convey personal experiences, joys and sorrows of love and friendship, etc. The work of al-Akhtal was influenced by pre-Islamic Arabic poetry .
