History of construction and service
In the 20s of the XX century, Argentina aimed to return naval superiority in the region . The battleships " Rivadavia " and " Moreno " were aimed at modernization in the USA in 1924 and 1926, respectively, and in 1926 the next fleet construction program was adopted. In 1926, the Argentine Navy ordered 3 British Shakespeare-class destroyers from World War I with minor design changes. They were named after the Argentine provinces of Mendoza ( Spanish Mendoza ), La Rioja ( Spanish La Rioja ) and Tucuman ( Spanish Tucumán ). The ships were built at the J. Samuel White & Co shipyard in Cause on the Isle of Wight , taking into account the requirements of the Argentines in 1927-1929.
With the outbreak of World War II, the destroyers were part of the squadron, which ensured the neutrality of Argentina . After the war, the ships underwent modernization, which included the installation of 40-mm anti-aircraft guns Bofors and updating radar equipment. Discarded in the 1960s.
