By the name of the square, the entire surrounding area is called South. On neighboring streets are famous institutions in Tomsk that have the word "Yuzhny" in the name: auto center, pharmacy, library, etc. . Sometimes Transport Square is confused with the South, located 200 m to the north-west along Krasnoarmeyskaya Street, at the junction of Nakhimov and Elizarovy Streets .

History

In 1895, at the crossing near South Square, the beginning of the construction of the railway from Taiga station to Tomsk was consecrated [2] .

In 1966, it was connected by tram service to the Tomsk-1 station and the Camp Garden . Later, the tram route to the Camp Garden was dismantled.

After the opening of the new Tomsk airport Bogashevo on November 6, 1967, the following traffic flows to the airport and through the square passed.

In 1989-1990, between the South Square and the village of Anikino, the archaeologist A. Gaman excavated an archaeological site with a thickness of the cultural layer of 6.7 meters, saturated with coals, calcined and calcined bones, chopped horse bones and fragments of a wooden log house [3] [ significance of fact? ] .
