Description
The museum was created on the initiative of Dimitry Putnikovich in 1896 by the Teachers' Union of Serbia in order to collect and store items of pedagogical and historical value. During both world wars it was completely destroyed.
After 1945, the Museum was restored, and since 1969 it has a permanent exhibition “Ten Centuries of a Serbian School in the Building of the Belgrade Real Gymnasium”, which tells about the history of schools at the Serbs from the 9th to the beginning of the 20th century.
The building was built in the style of classicism, supposedly designed by Franz Janke. Initially, it housed the residence of Mayor Tsvetko Rayovich, then the British Consulate, gendarmerie , army premises. The building is the oldest built in the European style. At the beginning of the 20th century, a two-story school building in modernist architecture was completed. [2]
