Biography
Wilhelm Maria Birgel was born into the family of a jeweler and engraver Johann Heinrich and Henrietta Dreiers. Until 1907, Willy Birgel attended Cologne Real School. At schools of applied art in Cologne and Düsseldorf and at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art, he was preparing to become his father's successor in family affairs. The production of Monna Baths by Meterlink in 1907 shocked him so much that the theater became his secret hobby. In 1910, he attended a theater school in Cologne. In 1913 he played the first small roles in the city theater in Bonn . Then came performances in Dessau and Koblenz . In 1914, Birgel was drafted into the army.
From 1919 he worked in the city theater in Aachen , from 1924 to 1936 - at the National Theater in Mannheim . Herbert Meish , who later became a filmmaker, made him a stage star.
In 1934, Willy Birgel made his film debut, playing the role of an English officer in the film Paul Wegener "Man Wants to Germany." At the beginning of his cinematic career, he played ambiguous characters. In 1937 he became a state actor. By this time, Birgel changed his role to the impeccable hero of German cinema. In addition, he played in the Volkswagen by Eugen Klepfer . Willy Birgel also participated in some tendentious films such as Enemies (1940) and Comrades (1941). In 1941, the film "... Rides for Germany" was set, after which it became known as the "German cinema jockey."
After the war, Birgel fell out of favor with the Allies. Thanks to the intervention of Erich Pommer in 1947, Birgel received his first post-war role in the film Between Today and Tomorrow. In 1955, he directed the film Pink Monday, which was not a success. After that, Birgel returned to the theater. In 1959, he became a member of the Schauspielhaus troupe in Zurich. He also played in all major German theaters. In 1965 he was a visiting assistant professor at the Volkwang School in Essen . In the 1960s, he played a number of roles in television films.
Willy Birgel, who until recently played in the theater, died on December 29, 1973 in Dubendorf near Zurich .
