International scientific name

Acanthobrama microlepis ( De Filippi , 1863)

Synonyms
  • Acanthalburnus microlepis
    (De Filippi, 1863) [1]

Characteristics

In appearance, it is similar to bleak and hives , but larger (maximum size - about 25 centimeters) [3] [4] and has a relatively large body height [5] . A distinctive morphological feature is the last unbranched ray of the dorsal fin, strongly thickened and relatively rigid (although its apex remains weak). There are 11 rays in the dorsal fin and 15–20 in the elongated anal fin [3] . Small scales; in the lateral line from 63 to 82 scales [3] [5] [6] . The lateral line is slightly curved.

The mouth is oblique, close to the final location. Pharyngeal teeth are arranged in two rows, rare gill stamens - in 10 rows [3] .

The color of the dorsal and caudal fins [6] , which have dark (almost black) tips, differs from bleak and flimsy ones. The pectoral and ventral fins are usually reddish. A wide dark stripe stretches along the sides of the body [3] .

Range

The range covers the reservoirs of the Kura basin (upper and middle reaches, down to the city of Mingachevir ) and Araks (down to the village of Karadonlu ). Perhaps living in the Iranian river Sefidrud [3] [4] .

Biology and Ecology

Biology and ecology are poorly understood. It inhabits rivers and lakes with cold water (10–20 ° C) [4] . It is more common in rivers with a fast current and a pebble bottom [5] .

Bentopelagic herbivorous species [4] .

Ripen at the age of 2-3 years with a body length of 8-12 cm. In Armenia spawning from late April to late August, and in Turkey - from early May to late July. The fertility of Turkish individuals is 2830 to 9705 eggs (correlates with the size and age of the females). In Armenia, the fertility of blackbrowing is higher and reaches 19 thousand eggs, the diameter of eggs is up to 1.87 mm [7] [8] .

Economic value

It has no commercial value [5] .
