Kokhanik, Petr Yuryevich

Peter Y. Kokhanik ( August 22, 1880 , Bekherov village, Austro-Hungary - May 20, 1969 , Passaic , New Jersey ) - Protopresbyter of the North American Metropolis , a prominent leader of the Carpathian movement in the United States .

Biography

Born on August 22, 1880 in the village of Bekherove, in Pryushevskaya Rus (now Bardejov district , Slovakia ) in a peasant family. He was baptized on August 27, 1880 in the Greek Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in Beherov by the priest Michal Artim. Received primary education in Uzhgorod .

In 1892 he moved with his family to the United States . In 1894 he moved to Russia and entered the St. Petersburg Theological Seminary . Then he transferred to the Tauride Theological Seminary , from which he graduated in 1902. In the same year he was ordained deacon and priest. Sent to serve in the USA.

Since 1902 - rector of St. John the Baptist Church in Charleroi (Pennsylvania), since 1905 - the Archangel Michael Church in Pittsburgh.

There was a Dean of Pittsburgh, and then Vilkes-Barra Districts. Pastor of Orthodox churches in the United States. He founded more than 10 new parishes in the United States.

In 1910 - Vice-Chairman, and then from 1910 to 1923 - Chairman of the Russian Orthodox Mutual Assistance Society in Vilks-Barre , Pennsylvania.

In 1913 he was appointed secretary of the North American Ecclesiastical Administration (Diocesan Council) and head of the New York émigré House.

From 1916 to 1923 he edited the church newspaper "Svet", and in 1916, 1917, 1921-1923 - "Russian Orthodox almanacs."

Since 1917 - the keystone of the New York Cathedral .

He was engaged in missionary work among the Carpathians and Uniates and founded a number of new Orthodox parishes in the USA.

From 1925 until his death, he was rector of the church of St. John the Forerunner in the city of Passaic .

Since 1947 - Dean of New Jersey County.

In 1951 he was granted the right to wear a miter , later elevated to the rank of protopresbyter .

Died on May 20, 1969 in Passaic, New Jersey. He was buried in the East Ridgloun Cemetery in Clifton, New Jersey.
