History

The building in which the Russian Embassy in Vienna was built was commissioned by the Duke of Nassausky by the famous architect Alois Wurm-Arnkranz in the style of the Vienna Neo-Renaissance in 1872-1873. The facade of the building is strictly proportional, decorated with an open balcony with a balustrade . Natural marble and granite were used in the decoration of the facade of the building (columns, main staircase) and details of the interior decoration. In the large reception hall and two salons of the second floor, original details of decoration and stucco work have been preserved. A glass dome rises above the central part of the building, which emphasizes the volume and airiness of the hall composition [1] .

The palace was purchased from the Duke von Nassau under the Russian Embassy in 1891 by the Russian Ambassador in Vienna, Prince A. B. Lobanov-Rostovsky . From this moment, the building has been used for over 120 years as an embassy, first to Russia, then to the USSR, and since 1991 to the Russian Federation in Austria. True, with some interruption in 1938-1945. After the Anschluss of Austria in March 1938 and its accession to the fascist Reich, diplomatic relations were interrupted. During the years of fascist rule in Austria, after the German attack on the Soviet Union, the Hitler Youth hostel and other institutions were located in the embassy building and in the church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker [2] .

In 1945, during the battles of the Soviet troops with the Nazi forces for the liberation of Vienna , the house was slightly damaged. During the restoration work in 1947-1950. According to the project of the Austrian architect Richard Ziedek, figures, a chariot and a flagpole, which adorned the building along the perimeter of the roof, as well as figures in niches along the front facade, were removed. Then two fountains located on the edges of the building were dismantled.

Important international meetings took place in the embassy building: in June 1961, N.S. Khrushchev met with John F. Kennedy , and in June 1979, negotiations of L.I. Brezhnev and J. Carter , which ended with the signing of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty ( OSV-2 ).
