Story
One year from the life of poor young Americans. Eddie Collins (Dunn) works as a seller in a radio store, he is not rich and has to save on everything, hoping to open his own business over time. Eddie meets Dorothy Haley (Eulers) and, despite the constant ridicule of her friend Edna Driggs (Gombell), falls in love with her. A young couple begins to live together. Permanent employment does not allow the young man to pay due attention to his beloved, which greatly complicates the psychological situation in the family. The fact that Dorothy is pregnant Eddie learns from Edna much later than many other friends. In order to earn $ 350 to pay for the services of the best obstetrician-gynecologist, Collins takes part in illegal fist fights. A doctor observing a pregnancy, finding out how Eddie made money, opens a bank account for the child and transfers a part of his fee there. Soon a couple is born safely in a couple. Happy parents take a newborn home in a taxi.

Artistic Features
The sensual and touching story created by Frank Borzeigi in midtones is developing evenly from the beginning to the end of the film. The director sometimes sacrifices an action in favor of emotional dialogues in which slang is often used. At the same time, harsh expressions do not sound insulting, as they are pronounced by the characters with spontaneity and are always appropriate [1] .
Rewards
In addition to receiving Oscars for best directing and best adapted script, the picture was nominated for an Oscar for the best film of the year , but lost the award to the Irving Talberg film Grand Hotel .
Criticism
The reviewer of The New York Times , in the review that followed immediately after the release of the film, called the acting skill of a trio of protagonists the main merit of the film
Sally Eilers in the role of Dorothy Haley does everything perfectly. She, under the careful guidance of Mr. Borzeigi, accurately senses the mood changes of the heroine. Minna Gombell also serves this purpose well thanks to her talented embodiment of the image of Edna. But Mr. Dunn is the main performer with an undeniable personality. Sometimes, as it seems without the slightest effort, he does something, and many eyes become wet with tears, and many lips begin to tremble ...
“ Variety ”, on the whole evaluating the picture as a very high-quality production, calls the scenes with Dr. Burgess [2] its most powerful side. The modern annotation on the TV Guide resource is short and sufficiently capacious: “A rather outdated, but touching melodrama” [3] .
