After a series of victories, Kutzer became the No. 1 challenger for IBF and had the right to meet with Evander Holyfield , but preferred to meet with No. 2 challenger Riddick Bow in the WBA illuminator. The fight took place on July 18, 1992 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Bow hit Kutzer below the waist in the 6th round, referee Mills Lane took 1 point off him, and again in the 7th. On this occasion, Kutzer turned away, expecting that Lane would give Bowe a warning and put his hands down and then missed the right uppercut. Bowe then struck two more hits that forced Kutzer to lower the ropes and Mills Lane intervened and stopped the fight. βThe fight definitely shouldn't have been stopped. It was a blow below the waist , βKutzer said after the fight.
