Life and work
Gorsky is a representative of realism . Among his works are still lifes , landscapes , plot drawings, portraits , illustrations for works. Theme of drawings: everyday and historical scenes from the life of the Ukrainian people, the image of Ukrainian traditions , characters and architecture .
Gorsky signed his works only in Polish, often in poetic form. Because of this, and also thanks to the Polish surname, many consider him a Polish artist . In the XIX century, a significant part of the right bank of Ukraine was part of the Austrian Empire , and later - of Austria-Hungary , therefore Poland and the western part of Ukraine were actually one country. That is why there is disagreement over the representative of which country Gorsky is.
Prosper Antonovich Gorsky was born in 1813 (the exact date of birth is unknown) in s. Lysyanka of the Kiev province in the family of a doctor. He studied drawing at the Basilian school in Uman (now in the Cherkasy region ), which he graduated in 1830. Most of the artist’s life passed in the Kiev and Volyn lips. He worked for several years in Zhitomir, where he created an album of landscapes of the city and its environs. In addition, Prosper Gorsky lived for a long time in the estates of Polish landowners, painting portraits of these landowners and their families, as well as creating landscapes of the surroundings.
Prosper Gorsky most likely never set himself the goal of becoming famous and conquering the world. Therefore, he did not organize exhibitions of his drawings, was not a member of any society of artists . With his works, the painter made a living selling them to wealthy Poles and Ukrainians. Therefore, most of Gorsky's drawings are kept in private collections and passed on from generation to generation.
Prosper Gorsky died in 1888 (the exact date of death is unknown) in Zhitomir.
