History
The Montreal Botanical Garden was founded in 1931, at the height of the Great Depression , by the mayor of Montreal, Camiyen Udom, on the initiative of the botanist Joseph Marie-Victorin . The garden breakdown project was designed by Henry Teuscher, and the art deco office building was designed by architect Lucien Kerouac. In 1936, the botanical garden was open to the public. [1] In 2007, the garden was included in the list of Canadian historical sites (Canada's Historic Places).
Botanical Garden Description
The area of the botanical garden is 75 hectares; there are a greenhouse complex, an arboretum , First Nations Garden, a Japanese garden , a Chinese garden, an Alpine garden, a rose garden, a rhododendron garden and azaleas Lesley Hankoka, an English garden, a garden of aquatic plants, a garden of medicinal plants. , garden of poisonous garden plants. The Chinese Garden of the Montreal Botanical Garden is the largest Chinese garden in the world outside of China.
The Garden of the First Nations is planted with typical Canadian plants: maples , birches and pines . Native American totems and exhibits displaying traditional Native American artwork and construction methods are installed on the garden.
About 10 thousand roses were planted in the botanical rose garden, including old varieties created by breeders before 1867. In the garden of lilac planted about 3 thousand bushes.
