The 23rd European Basketball Championship was held in France from May 26 to June 4, 1983 . The matches of the preliminary stage were hosted by Limoges (group “A”) and Caen (group “B”); Semifinal and final games were held at the Beaulieu Sports Palace in Nantes . For the first time in history, the Italian national team became the champion [1] .

The tournament was held according to the same formula as the 1977 European Championship : 12 participating teams were divided into two preliminary groups, then semifinal games were held (according to the “cross” scheme: the first team of group “A” competed with the second team of group “B” etc.) and the final round in which winners and losers in semifinal matches played among themselves.
The 1983 championship was the last in which two points were awarded for all shots from the game. Since the next championship in 1985, a three-point zone rule was introduced [2] .

Symbolic Team
The most useful player in the championship was named Spain's point guard Juan Antonio Corbalan . In addition to him, the symbolic team included Nikos Galis ( Greece ), Juan Antonio San Epifanio (Spain), Stanislav Kropilak ( Czechoslovakia ) and Arvidas Sabonis ( USSR ). Nikos Galis became the most productive player in the tournament, gaining 33 points on average per game, Stanislav Kropilak, Mika Berkovich ( Israel ) and Ratko Radovanovic ( Yugoslavia ) who shared the second place had more than 10 points less - 21.3 [3] .
