Initially, the song written by Swift was not planned for inclusion in the soundtrack [1] . In the early days of the release, it was available exclusively for purchase on the iTunes Store [2] . Subsequently, it was distributed in other online stores as a single. By the beginning of 2012, the singer announced that the song would sound not only in the film, but also fall into the official soundtrack to it.
The composition was welcomed by critics. She was called one of the leading applicants for the Golden Globe Award in the nomination "Best Song Written for the Film" [3] [4] . Music critic Amy Sairatu from Pop Crush noted “Taylor’s hoarse and intoxicating vocals,” as well as conservative choice of tunes and “guitar accompaniment to create an atmosphere of songs around the campfire” [5] . Rolling Stone journalist Jody Rosen gave the single four out of five stars, calling it a "beautiful ballad" [6] . At the 55th Grammy ceremony, the song was presented in two categories: "Best Country, performed by a duet or group" and "Best Song Recorded for Media Culture". In the latter category, Taylor won [7] .
The song debuted on the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart at number 19 with 130,000 records sold [8] . In the Hot 100 rating, the composition showed poor results, reaching the 30th maximum position [9] . As of the end of 2012, the single was sold more than 1.3 million times in the United States [10] . It is worth noting that Safe & Sound has gained popularity outside the United States. In the New Zealand national chart, she reached the peak of 11th position [11] .
