Troops of the Southwestern Front moved along all roads east: convoys consisting of tanks, armored vehicles, trucks, horse-drawn carts, commanders, and Red Army soldiers.
The enemy at 15.00 captured Zbarazh and the city of Tarnopol . The Germans could move through the city of Volochisk to the city of Proskurov , where the command post of the Southwestern Front, led by the commander of the front, Colonel General MP P. Kirponos and the defeat of the rear of the 26th and 12th armies, was located. [8] , [2]
On the way of the enemy, the front commander, Colonel General Kirponos, sets up the 24th mechanized corps. The commander deployed the 24th mechanized corps from the Lanovets area to the south to occupy the Proskurovsky fortified area at the Avratin, Volochisk, Kanevka line, subordinating him to the commander of the 6th Army. The corps had the task of firmly occupying the defense to ensure the withdrawal of troops of the 6th and 26th army. [9]
At the same time, on the orders of the front commander, the 49th Rifle Corps, Major General I. A. Kornilov, was raised by alarm and moved to the line of Yampol, Teofiopol, Ulyanovka (Lanovets area) for defense. The case was supposed to be next to the right of the 24th mk. [ten]
3 July
2.00. The enemy strengthens the pressure in the Rivne and Tarnopol directions. The troops of the South-Western Front retreat to the border of the river. Sluchuta, Slavuta, Yampol, Grzhymalov, Chortkov, Gorodenka, Shot and must stand on it until dark on 9.7.41. The 6th Army must prevent the enemy from breaking through to Zhytomyr and stubbornly defend the Novograd-Volynsky fortified area . The 49th Rifle Corps was part of the army reserve. [eleven]
The 49th sk (190, 197th rifle divisions) was advanced to the line of Yampol, Teofiopol , Ulyanovka ( Lanovets area).
5'th of July
Since July 5, the 199th SD 49th SC has been defending in the southern sector of the Novograd-Volyn fortified area on the Broniki - Novy Miropol ( Miropol (Zhytomyr region) ) - Korostki section. [12]
July 6th
The 1st German tank group advanced on a narrow site. The troops of the 19th mechanized corps of General Feklenko and the 7th rifle corps of General Dobroserdov did not hold back the pressure of the German troops. On the site of Novograd-Volynsky, Novy Miropol, the Soviet front was broken.
The enemy defeated the troops of the 199th SD 49th sk near the settlement of Novy Miropol (the settlement east of Polonnoye, near the Shepetovka-Polonnoye railway line). Due to the lack of leadership in the battle of the command of the 199th SD 49th SK and the premature abandonment of structures by the UR troops, when the enemy broke through the fortified area in New Miropol, the 617th division of the division retreated from its positions in panic. After this breakthrough, the division command lost control of two regiments. The division suffered heavy losses in personnel and equipment. [13] , [12]
On July 7, the enemy occupied Berdichev .
July 8. After a morning trip to the Berdichev area, the front forces commander ordered the sixth army commander to quickly concentrate the 49th sk in the vicinity of Lyubar so that in the morning he would launch a counterattack to the north and close the gap. [14]
July 9th
Colonel A.N. Alekseev, the commander of the 199th regiment of the 49th sk, having a written order of the Military Council of the front - to hold positions, including at New Miropol, on the basis of the allegedly oral order of the commander of the 7th sk, 492nd joint venture, which had by all means to maintain the defense of the line until reinforcements arrived, ordered to withdraw. Other regiments did not receive this order and were in a difficult situation. The division commander Alekseev, together with Commissar Korzhev and other commanders, leaving the division’s troops, fled from the battlefield. [12]
The breakthroughs in the area of Novy Miropol on July 6 and Gulsk on July 9, despite the difficult situation on all sectors of the front, carried a great threat, since these breakthroughs further worsened the situation of the troops of the 6th, 26th and 12th armies, which could be encircled. [14]
During the day, troops of the 5th army attacked the enemy in the area of Novograd-Volynsky and cut off the Novograd-Volynsky-Zhitomir highway, cutting off the enemy’s troops from Zhitomir, and the 6th army (combined units of the 4th mk and a tank group under the command of the general Ogurtsova ), near the city of Berdichev . The enemy advanced detachment reached the city of Zhytomyr. Combined detachments of the 4th mechanized corps managed to advance to the southern outskirts of the city of Chudnov and cut the Novy Miropol - Berdichev highway. The rifle and mechanized corps of the 5th army from the north and the 49th rifle from the south are preparing to launch counterattacks on the wedge of the enemy going to Zhytomyr, they are hastily moving forward to the starting lines for the offensive. [14]
The enemy was able to organize an attack of large enemy forces on Yanushpol and the combined detachments of the 4th mechanized corps were threatened by the environment. Therefore, they were forced to leave occupied by them on the eve of the city of Chudnov and leave the Novy Miropol-Berdichev highway. Commander-6 General Muzychenko ordered the 49th Rifle Corps to launch a counterattack (greatly weakened). [14]
The 49th corps, with its counterattack, was supposed to help get out of the encirclement and the 7th sk. [14]
