Back in the 50s of the 16th century, King Gustav Vasa ordered the construction of a fortification on a small island located on the Kolbekkson River, which flows into Lake Mälaren . In its place in the 70s of the XVII century for Queen Hedwig Eleanor , the Strömsholm Palace was built, built according to the drawings of Nicodemus Tessin the Elder . At that time, the foundation was laid for a park designed in the French Baroque style .
The palace had two floors and four corner towers. The palace chapel, designed by Karl Horleman , was ready in 1741. The Chinese hall of the palace is decorated with frescoes made in 1774 by Lars Boulander . The palace is surrounded by several wooden buildings of the late XVII century, intended for the court.
In 1766, the heir to the Swedish throne, the future king Gustav III , married Princess Sofia Magdalena of Denmark. The Riksdag presented the princess with a palace as a wedding present. Subsequently, large-scale finishing work of the building began under the supervision of architect Karl Fredrik Adelkranz .
In 1868-1968, the Army Riding and Driving School was located in the Strömsholm Palace. In 1985, the restoration of the facade of the building was carried out. At the same time, the roof, which since the 19th century was covered with wooden tiles, was covered with sheet metal.
In 1993, the palace and its environs were transferred to the State Real Estate Administration. In the 90s, its phased restoration was carried out.
The palace is open for visits in the spring and summer months, as well as on some days of the remaining months of the year.
