Maria Edwards MacClure ( Spanish: María Edwards Mac Clure December 11, 1893 , Santiago , Chile - June 8, 1972 , ibid.) (Also known as Maria de Edwards Errasuris , Maria Errasuris or Madame Errasuris ) - Chilean citizen , a member of the French Resistance , who saved Jewish children during the Holocaust in France .

Biography

Maria Edwards was born in Santiago, in the family of Agustin Edwards Ross and Maria Louise McClure Ossandon. Being very young, she married the diplomat Guillermo Errasuris Vergara. After the wedding, they moved to Paris , where her husband took a diplomatic post. Guillermo committed suicide in 1922 , and Maria remained to live in France. In 1926, she remarried the French writer Jacques Feydo, but they soon divorced. [one]

During the German occupation, she worked as a nurse at the Rothschild Hospital. She became a member of the French resistance and repeatedly saved Jewish children whom the Nazis planned to send to concentration camps to subsequently destroy. In particular, Maria saved Betty and Marcel Friedman , whose mother was killed by the Nazis [2] .

The Gestapo arrested Mary, she was interrogated and tortured, she miraculously managed to survive.

Maria Edwards died in Santiago on June 8, 1972 .

Rewards

On September 2, 1953, Maria Edwards was awarded the Legion of Honor for her services to France.

In 2005, the Institute of Catastrophe and Heroism Yad Vashem awarded her the honorary title of the Righteous of the World [3] . The award ceremony with the participation of two granddaughters of Mary Edwards took place on November 7, 2006 in Santiago with the participation of Israeli Ambassador to Chile David Cohen [4] .
