Origin and career

Bankim Chandra came from a Bengal Brahmin family. His father served as deputy collector in Midinipur . After graduating from the University of Calcutta , Bankim Chandra also entered the civil service and became deputy collector in Jessore . He held this position until 1891.

Literary activity

The first literary experiments of Bankim Chandra date back to the early 1860s. The previous generation of Bengali writers (e.g. Ishwar Chandra Gupta ) had a great influence on him. At the same time, Bankim Chandra was well acquainted with English literature - his contemporaries called him "Indian Walter Scott ." Indeed, the writer is best known for his historical novels - “The daughter of the commandant of the fortress” (1865), “Raj Singh” (1882), “The Abode of Joy” (1882), etc. Most of the historical works of Bankim Chandra describe the struggle of the Indians ( Rajput princes, Bengal rebels of the XVIII century) against foreign invaders. The historical novels of Bankima Chandra contributed greatly to the formation of pan-Indian patriotism. The song “Bande Mataram” (“Greetings, Mother Motherland” - from the novel “The Abode of Joy”) became the anthem of the swadeshi movement in 1905-1908. However, the patriotism of Bankim Chandra is somewhat anti-Muslim in nature. Bankim Chandra also owns a number of social novels - Poison Tree, Wife of Raj Mohan, Testament of Krishno Kant. In the 1870s, the writer published the literary magazine Bangadarshan (in 1901 the magazine was revived by Rabindranath Tagore ). Also, Bankim Chandra is known as the author of religious and philosophical works, including a commentary on the Bhagavad-gita .
