Blancan (Moon Crater)

Blancanus Crater ( lat. Blancanus ), not to be confused with Blanchinus Crater ( lat. Blanchinus ) - a large impact crater in the mountainous continental region of the southern part of the visible side of the Moon . The name is given in honor of the Italian astronomer Giuseppe Blankan (1566-1624) and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1935. The formation of the crater dates back to the nectar period [1] .

Crater Description

Surroundings of the Blancan Crater. A fragment of the map of the visible side of the moon [2] .

The nearest neighbors of the crater are the Scheiner Crater in the northwest; Clavius crater in the north-northeast; Rutherford crater in the north-east and Klaprot crater in the south-south-west [3] . Selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater , diameter 105.8 km [4] , depth 5.97 km [5] .

The crater shaft is quite well preserved, the inner slope of the shaft has a terrace-like structure. The height of the shaft above the surrounding area is 1580 m [1] , one of the peaks in the western part of the shaft has an elevation of approximately 5486 m [6] . The bottom of the crater bowl is relatively even, in the crater bowl there are two small central peaks somewhat offset southwest of the center of the bowl. In the southern part of the bowl are several small craters. The volume of the crater is approximately 14,300 km³ [1] .
