Story
Gordon Shamway, an eccentric alien from a distant planet Melmak, which exploded for unclear reasons in 1985 according to earthly chronology. After spending almost a year in space, his spacecraft crashed into the garage of the Tanner family, where he lived for about 4 years . When his Melmacian friends wanted to take him from Earth, Gordon was captured by the US Air Force and taken to Edwards Air Force Base, and the Tanners moved to Iceland (formerly Mozambique) under the Witness Protection Program. Since then, he has been a key part of the government program under the name “Project Alpha” (by the name given to him by Willy Tanner, which replaced him with his real name). Different experiments are put on it, it is tested in every possible way on a centrifuge and crash tests. During one of these tests (electric shock test), one of the scientists dies, Dr. Warner, who tried to remove the “Danger: High Voltage” sticker from the equipment so that it would not scare Alpha, but he gets a charge of electricity.
So passes 6 years. Although Alf is in captivity, his entrepreneurial talent and high knowledge of earthly culture allowed him to create the conditions for an underground king who trades in smuggling, gambling and bookmaking. Put him to guard the sergeants Romboyl and Murphy became his adjutants and the main agents between him and the "outside world". Alf lives happily ever after and hardly remembers that life when, with every knock on the door, he was sent to hide in the kitchen.
On the initiative of the base commander and the Chief of Space Security, Colonel Gilbert Milfoil ( Martin Sheen ), seeking to do away with Alf as an extraterrestrial threat, convenes a Government Committee headed by General Myron Stone, consisting of representatives of the US Senate , CIA and Pentagon . Major Mellis Hill ( Jensen Daggett ), a medical psychologist, and Captain Rick Mullikan ( William O'Leary ), a scientific consultant, stand up in opposition to the Millfoil plan. After looking at the records of the experiments and listening to the opinions of both parties, the Committee takes a relatively neutral position, banning all experiments on Alf, but also not allowing any contact outside the base, both on Earth and in space. After Milfoil talks to his adjutant, junior lieutenant Harold Reese ( Scott Michael Campbell ), talking about his past. When he was 12 years old, his mother allegedly kidnapped the aliens and drove her to insanity with her experiences, which was why she was sent to a hospital where she committed suicide, leaving a note full of strange characters (Milfoil believes that they correspond to the drawings in Peru and flying saucer characters in Zone 51 ). Realizing that he cannot achieve his goals through the Committee, Milfoil is going to get a serum from the bio-weapons laboratory to kill Alpha through the signature of Reese. This “victory over evil”, in his opinion, will allow him to become president .
At this time, Melissa comes to the laboratory to Rick, who has long been breathing unevenly to her, and is showing documents about her transfer from Edwards Base. At that moment, a courier arrives with an application from Reese for a vaccine from the bio-weapons department, and both scientists understand that Milfoil decided to go around the Committee. Calling for Alpha’s security guard, Murphy says that instead of a pedicure , a medical examination is scheduled. Realizing that the next day for Alpha will be the last in his life, Rick and Melissa decide to abduct Alpha from the base. Distracting Murphy, who was waiting for his “boss” pizza, scientists enter the room Alpha. The capricious and effeminate alien is in no hurry to leave the habitable place, and then Rick injects him with a sleeping pill and puts it in a postal bag. Having taken him to a military minibus, Melissa is going to personally transfer Alpha to a “safe place”, thinking not to entice Rick in upcoming events, but he leaves the chain of command and, like a man, he orders to get into the car, taking all the responsibility on himself. At Alpha's checkpoint itself, he wakes up and is about to shout “Sure!”, But Rick imitates his voice quite well, and no one notices anything (Rick did the same trick in Alpha’s room when Romboyl brought pizza).
After a few hours of driving, Rick and Alf begin to wonder "where are we going." Melissa says that her father’s old friend Dexter Moyers ( Miguel Ferrer ), a former NASA scientist who was discredited by the government for trying to divulge information about UFOs, agreed to give them shelter in his house on the border of Arizona and New Mexico . The path is not long, and therefore the fugitives decide to stay in a small motel. Alf is extremely offended by scientists for being taken away from "friends", and that the rooms do not serve lunch. Rick goes to the nearest grocery store, simultaneously getting rid of the mail bag, where Alf "coped". The time is already 3 am, and Alf is not sleeping, watching TV, not letting Rick and Melissa sleep. When Alf began to jump on the bed, the trucker driver in the next room comes to deal with the noise. Alpha is exiled to the bathroom, which makes him feel nostalgic, and Rick and Melissa make a neighbor believe that it was not jumping. Taking advantage of the situation, Alf escapes.
Since the alien cannot calmly walk around the street, Alf comes to the motel manager ( Ray Walston ), who thinks that a glutton has come to him from Florida . Alf asks the manager for a coat, hat, and quarter . Hiding safely from prying eyes, Alf calls the base from a phone booth, telling Murphy that Rick and Melissa had been abducted and waiting for a message on the Internet and sending him his savings. Finally, Alf sees the signboard of the bar with the name "Kitty-Cat" and decides that cats are served there (the main delicacy on Melmak). The bar turns out to be a strip club , and the cats are definitely not served there. Alf scares the waitress and the security guard, but Rick, who comes in time, dressed in military uniform, quickly calms them down, saying that they are Mardi Gras actors. Regarding the coat and hat, the manager calls the police, but the bottles of genie found in the chair and the story about the "wolverine from Florida" gives the policeman reason to believe that the manager has just delirium tremens .
In the room, Alph recognizes a call to the base, which means the imminent appearance of the military. Rick and Melissa decide to change clothes and a car, for which they give Alpha, as the initiator of the idea, 5 minutes. Alf returns to the manager, returning the borrowed coat, hat and quarter. Posing as an agent of the Government, he gives the keys to the minibus, promising in exchange for a hundred CDs and a container of blue army socks if the manager gives him his car. It turns out to be a pink Cadillac Eldorado , on which the fugitives continue their journey.
Meanwhile, Malfoyl, who learned about the escape, comes to Alpha's cell and is surprised that the entire base, even Reese, used the services of Alpha Corporation behind his back. He personally heads the search team and gets to the motel during the day, where he arrests the manager who was trying to repaint the minibus, but Alpha’s trail breaks off.
When he reaches Moyers' house, Melissa is surprised at the host’s hospitality, his ability to manage the household alone and even Rockett, the robot steward he created, with a rather peculiar look at things (creating a matrix of behavior, Moyers took the character of his ex-wife as a basis). When Moyers first sees Alpha, he immediately loses his speech because he finally saw a real alien, Alf himself is fascinated by Moyers' assistant Nina ( Liz Coke ), and Rocket becomes a worthy replacement for Roboylt and Murphy. During the dinner, Rick, who does not fully trust Dexter, asks him about his dismissal from NASA and participation in the high-profile "Delo Lobo" concerning the sale of government secrets to third parties. Rick did not receive support from Melissa, or, especially, Alpha. Dexter Moyers says that, having learned from Melissa about Alpha and the plan of Milfoil, he decided to open the existence of a Melmacian to the world through the Nigel Nevil Show, connecting with a studio in London via satellite.
At night, Alf comes to Rick to help him with a message for Murphy over the Internet. Turning on the computer, Rick suddenly notices a file called “Operation: Payback,” full of names and numbers, somehow related to Alph. The incoming Moyers turns off the file and says that when the computer is turned on, the room is being monitored simultaneously. Now the message is Alpha engaged Moyers, and Rick goes to Melissa's room and shares his suspicions with her.
The next morning, Rick leaves. Moyers and his people are intensely searching for him, and at the same time everyone except Alpha is worried about the future broadcast. When Melissa asks Moyers about Operation Payback, the “good guy Dex” shows himself to the present. In fact, Dexter Moyers, offended by the government for not being taken seriously about UFOs over Utah , became an “information trader”. When the news of Alpha reached him, he decided to arrange an auction to kill two birds with one stone: to take revenge on the United States for being “rejected” and at the same time receive a substantial sum, thanks to which he would leave the United States forever, leaving them in chaos after the alien scandal . Melissa flatly refuses to participate in "Payback", after which she is locked in a room.
Encouraged by Rick’s disappearance and Melissa’s captivity, Moyers and his people begin to lose their charm in Alpha’s eyes, and while the live broadcast begins, the alien locks in the toilet. In parallel with this, Rick calls the base of his friend-scientist and asks to find out for him everything that is on the “Lobo Case”. He understands that the calls are being tapped, and he deliberately wants to lure Mylfoyle, hinting at Moyers. When the colonel and the captain meet, Milfoil threatens Rick with a prison, and he offers a deal: Rick hands over the military to Moyers, but they don’t touch Melissa and Alpha.
In the midst of the show, the military rush into Dexter's house, arresting all who are there. Nigel Neville, who considered the break of satellite communications for confirming the theory that an interview with Moyers is nothing more than a “desperate attempt by a ufologist to declare himself,” makes the disgraced NASA scientist ridiculed. Malfoyl, of course, violates the contract and wants to take advantage of the situation in his favor - to destroy the alien fugitive and get rid of the opposition. Rick, remembering the camcorder, turns on the computer and, under the camera recording, shows Milfoyle the very application paper for the poison for Alpha. Malfoyl confesses that he used Reese only as a scapegoat, promising a signature boost.
On the Edwards Base, the former Alpha Room now accurately recreates the prison cell, where it is tied to a chair, and soldiers ready to shoot at it. Malfoyl comes to gloat over the position of Alpha in prison, sincerely believing that this alien confused Hill and Maluganna's reason, and that people like Alf brought his mother to an insane asylum and suicide. Now, the Committee will confirm that Alf is a threat, and his death will be a message for any extraterrestrial life, that you should not go to Earth. Alf, realizing that the situation is nowhere worse, accepts his fate, but believes that the colonel is just a psycho-xenophobe who reread Ron Hubbard .
The head of the Committee, Stone, comes to congratulate Moyers on a brilliant operation to capture an alien, and the colonel himself is now more interested in the presidential election. Reese comes to the office with a cassette in his hands. With the permission of the general, he includes a record on which the confession of Milfoil in the Moyers' house. For Stone, it becomes clear that Hill and Malugann acted to protect Alpha, and were not hypnotized by him. This cassette puts an end to both the military career of the colonel and his dreams of the presidency.
The next meeting of the “Project: Alf” Committee takes place with the announcement of “good” news: Reese receives a long-awaited promotion, as does Rick and Melissa (after a brief conversation, it’s clear that they started dating). Alf becomes the full ambassador of all aliens on Earth, and the robot Moyers Rocket became his chief assistant, although he performs the old functions of a steward. Finally, Alf wants to hit the table with a hammer to close the meeting, but falls into the hand of Rick, who wants to take the hammer from him. Well, they still have to suffer with the "Project:" Alph "."
