History
Next to Andermatt is the famous Devil's Bridge , a descendant of the first bridge that Suvorov’s troops overcame after fighting after taking the St. Gotthard Pass in September 1799 . In 1898, a monument was erected next to this place in memory of Suvorov and his soldiers who performed this feat.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the " Encyclopedic Dictionary of Brockhaus and Efron " described this settlement [2] :
| Andermatt or Urzern (in Italian. Orsera) is a beautiful village with 722 inhabitants. (1880), with many stone houses, in the Swiss canton of Uri, an almost treeless Urzern valley irrigated by Reiss, lies at an altitude of 1444 m above sea level, at the foot of Mount St. Anne (St. Annaberg), and is very poorly protected from avalanches that come down from this mountain, due to a heavily cut down pine forest. In addition to a very rational Alpine economy, the main source of livelihood of the inhabitants of this village was until recently transit trade, since the three main postal tracts of the Alpine country converge in the Urzern valley (S. Gotthard road going to the Tessino valley, Fourka to the Rhone and Verkhne- Alpine road - to the Rhine valley). With the opening of the S.-Gotthard Railway, passing away from Andermatt, this village was cut off from trade going along the S.-Gotthard Road, but it remained in transit through Fourka and the Upper Alpine Road; goods go through A. to the Geshenskaya station of S.-Gotthard railway. village along the Shelensky gorge. |
