Biography

In 1931 he graduated from the medical faculty of the Belarusian Medical Institute , after which he worked as an assistant in the department of normal anatomy of this institute.

From 1932 to 1933 he served in the Red Army as a doctor. At the end of his military service, Iosif Markovich went to Moscow and worked at the department of faculty surgery of the 1st Moscow State Medical Institute under the direction of N. N. Burdenko , where he defended his thesis on “Materials for the study of joint mobilization (ankylosis and arthroplasty) ". In 1938, he transferred to work at the Research Institute of Neurosurgery. From this moment on, his fate is inextricably linked to neurosurgery.

In 1940, I.M. Irger was drafted into the army. He passed the Finnish and the entire Great Patriotic War , which he finished as head of the neurosurgical department. After the war, on the instructions of the command of the Soviet Army, he organized the medical faculty of the University of Berlin .

Demobilized from the army in 1946, he worked as a senior researcher at the Central Neurosurgical Institute. N. N. Burdenko . Since 1953, I. M. Irger led the neurosurgical department of the hospital named after him. S.P. Botkin . In 1955, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic: "Surgical treatment of cerebellar tumors."

In 1962, I. M. Irger founded the neurosurgical department in the clinic of nervous diseases of the 1st Moscow Medical Institute. I.M.Sechenova, where he worked as a professor until the last day of his life.

The range of scientific interests of Professor I. M. Irger was extremely wide. He contributed to the development of the treatment of traumatic brain injury, neurooncology, craniovertebral abnormalities, diseases of the spinal cord. The research results were reflected in more than 180 scientific articles and 8 monographs. A special place among these works is occupied by his textbook Neurosurgery. The first edition of the textbook was published in 1971. After that, the textbook was reprinted in 1982. For many years, the textbook of I. M. Irger remained the only textbook on neurosurgery for students in the USSR.

Under his leadership, 29 candidate and 4 doctoral dissertations were defended. For many years, I. M. Irger was deputy editor-in-chief of the journal “Questions of Neurosurgery” named after Academician N. N. Burdenko.
