History

Kuprava began to develop in the 1920s as a small settlement near the railway station on the Riga - Pytalovo line, built in 1916. The station was built in 1904 [3] [4] . The settlement was isolated in 1926 from the Vilyak estate (Marienhaus estate [5] ). In 1927, Kuprava received the status of a village. In 1935, 73 people lived there [6] in 10 yards [4] .

Mail appeared in Kuprava in 1910, and a pharmacy in 1928. The outpatient clinic was opened in 1947, on November 15, 1953 - the library [4] .

Rapid development of Kuprava took place at the end of the 1960s, when the development of one of the largest clay deposits in the Baltic countries, which was used for the production of drainage pipes, expanded clay granules and facade bricks, began here. The reserves of the field are estimated at 3.744 million cubic meters [2] .

In 1971, the largest plant in the Baltics producing ceramic drainage pipes for land reclamation was opened in Kuprava. He produced 6.6 million pipes and 6.5 million pieces of brick per year.

For workers, 6 five-story apartment buildings were built. In 1974, Kuprava received the status of an urban-type settlement .

Before the territorial reform in Latvia in 2009, it was part of the Balvi district , then it entered the Viljak region.

In 1992, the drainage pipe plant was closed, the inhabitants parted, and the village received the nickname of the ghost town, since the population of Kuprava actually decreased tenfold: if in Soviet times up to 3,000 people lived here, now about 400 residents are officially registered, many of them who really left their homes [6] .

School

The school in Kuprava [3] was founded in 1920, initially it studied 20-25 children from teacher Minna Revele. In 1922, it received the status of an elementary school, the number of students grew to 86. In 1924, the school moved to a new building and became a six-year-old. In 1937-1954, it was headed by Peteris Evelis, in 1954-1965 - Zenta Ruksha. In 1965-1977, the director of the school was Vladimir Sergeyev, he initiated the construction of a new school building. The work was continued by Valentina Vrublevsk in 1977-1979.

In 1977, the school moved to a new brick building with a turret above the entrance, until 1982 it was headed by Inara Nikulina. During these years, 600 children studied in it.

The longest-running director was Emerita Rancane (1989-2008). With her, the school received the award as the most beautiful in the Balvi district [4] . For good work teachers A. Brice, K. Britsis, V. Wrublewsk, A. Barshevsk, S. Eromane were noted. Musical training was conducted by Nina Baikova, who also organized the Strautiņš children's vocal and instrumental ensemble ("Brook"), which adorned all the holidays in the village with her participation.

In October 1986, school teachers Anna Gabrane and Antonia Brice founded an ethnographic musical ensemble that performed Latgalian spiritual, labor, and pastoral songs. The ensemble performed in various cities of Latvia, participated in the festival "Baltica". Since 2011, he has been led by Sandra Andreeva.

In 2009, the school was headed by Svetlana Romane, who organized in 2010 the celebration of the 90th anniversary of the Kuprava Basic School. She believed that the school in Kuprava should be preserved and celebrate the centenary, however, it was closed from the 2014-2015 school year [7] . By the time it closed, 21 students and 12 preschoolers were studying in it, who were transferred to nearby schools. The building remained unused, and the teachers were unemployed.

Among the well-known graduates of the school are businessman and politician Andris Morozov , deputy of the 12th Saeima of Latvia (2017-2018) [8] .
