Biography
Johannes de Klerk was born in 1903 in Burgersdorp , Cape Colony , spent his childhood in Pochefstroom , where he graduated from university in 1926. From 1927 to 1945 he worked in Nilstrom and Witwatersrand , at first he was a school teacher, then - secretary of the white workers' union. In January 1947, Johannes de Klerk became the administrative secretary of the National Party in Randa, and since 1948 - the party's chief secretary in Transvaal. From 1949 to 1955, he was a member of the Provincial Council of Transvaal.
In 1954, Johannes de Klerk became a senator, as well as the Minister of Labor and the Minister of Public Works in the government of Johannes Streidom . Since Strade was married to his sister, this gave rise to rumors of nepotism.
He served as Minister of the Interior (1961–1966) and Minister of Education (1967–1968). In 1967 and 1968 he was promoted to the ceremonial post of President of South Africa.
From 1969 to 1976, Johannes de Klerk was president of the Senate of South Africa. When President Jacobus Johannes Fouche expired in April 1975, Johannes de Klerk acted as president in accordance with the South African Constitution until the inauguration of the next elected president. In 1976, he resigned and lived out his days on his farm.
