The definition of polka as a genre of music appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. Initially, the musicians performing it were awarded in the folk category [2] . “Best Polish Style Record” was first awarded in 1986 at the 28th Grammy Awards ceremony for Frank Yankovic's 70 Years of Hits album [3] . The prize was awarded primarily as a sign of respect for the artist’s popularity, as Billboard and the American Association of Recording Companies did not track sales of albums of this genre [2] [4] . In 1987, the albums of Jimmy Sterr and Eddie Blazonchik received an equal number of votes [5] , as a result of which the award was first presented to two performers for different albums. Before the 34th Grammy ceremony , a decision was made to rename the category [6] - it began to be called the Grammy Award for Best Polish Album [6] . Since 2001, the prize was awarded not only to the artist of the album, but also to other participants in the recording: producers, sound engineers and other staff. The last award in this category was presented at the 51st Grammy ceremony , after which the academy decided to abolish the award. After this event, many performers of the genre were supposed to be considered in nominations in the categories of folk and ethnic music , but this did not happen [7] . Many music critics noted that the reorganization of the category was promoted by a large number of awards from Sterr, as well as a loss of relevance in the genre [8] .
The absolute record holder for the number of victories in the category was Jimmy Störr, who received a total of 18 awards (including as a member of the Jimmy Sturr and His Orchestra team) [9] . Three consecutive owners in a row is Walter Ostanek [10] . Most often, the award was received by American performers (20 times) and only three times the Canadian Ostanek. The record holder for the number of nominations without victories is Lenny Gomulka. Below is a complete list of all the winners and nominees for this award.
